Teens participating in community service
July 11, 2014 • Diocese of St. Augustine

More than 240 teens – and their chaperones – from around the U.S., as well as a few from our diocese, participated in this year’s Catholic HEART Workcamps, July 6-11.

A national organization, Catholic HEART Workcamps provides young people the opportunity to participate in community service projects for a week. Their week of service may include painting, general home repairs, cleaning, landscaping and other activities.

Teens from Kentucky, Iowa, Illinois, and Connecticut, joined a few students from Jacksonville’s Bishop John J. Snyder High School, covering lots of ground in all areas of Jacksonville from the Northside to the Beaches, and even Divine Mercy Thrift Shop and All Saints Nursing Home.

Founded in 1993 by former youth ministers, Steve and Lisa Walker of Winter Park, FL, Catholic HEART Workcamp is about Service, Connection and Loving Others. The first CHWC was held in 1993 in Orlando with 100 participants and has grown to over 13,000 serving in 2013.
