Discovering Our Catholic Roots in Florida
In 2015, the fourth grade teachers of the Diocese of St. Augustine developed an interactive timeline for their students as part of the 450th anniversary of St. Augustine and the establishment of the Catholic faith in the United States and Canada. The timeline traces our Florida Catholic roots from the time of Pedro Menéndez de Avilés – the Spanish explorer who founded St. Augustine in 1565 – to the time Bishop Agustín Verot was installed the Vicar Apostolic of Florida in 1858 and the establishment of the Diocese of St. Augustine in 1870 with Verot appointed our first bishop.
The timeline notes important events in our history and includes pictures, links to websites with additional information and brief descriptions of key historical events.
Teachers can also access shared lesson plans and study guides that can be used to support instruction in our fourth grade classrooms, as students learn about our Florida Catholic history, mission life and their connection to world events. Click here for the lesson plans.
