Diocesan Pastoral Council
The Diocesan Pastoral Council is a body of the faithful that is established in a diocese to assist the bishop in the pastoral matters of the diocese. The pastoral council lacks any legislative or governing power and functions solely as a consultative body. It is established under the authority of the bishop and, although strongly urged by canon law, is not a mandatory organism of the diocese.
Membership on a Pastoral Council is open to lay men and women, religious and clerics. All must be practicing Roman Catholics. The common law states that membership is determined in a manner established by the bishop. In most cases, some persons are automatically members because of the office they hold, others may be freely appointed by the bishop, and still others are elected.
Diocesan Pastoral Council Mission Statement
The mission of the Diocesan Pastoral Council is to study, ponder and make recommendations on pastoral matters, which the bishop, as pastor of the diocese, presents to the council for thought, deliberation and reflection.
