Presbyteral Council
Mandatory for each diocese, the Presbyteral Council (priests’ council) are representative bodies of the presbyterate of the diocese. The council is made up of ex officio members and members elected by the priests of the diocese.
Those eligible to vote in Presbyteral Councils and to be elected as delegates include all secular priests incardinated in the diocese and other priests, including religious, who exercise some ministry in the diocese.
Delegates to the Presbyteral Council serve for a set term. When the diocese becomes vacant, the council ceases to exist (cf. Canons 495-502).
Although priests’ councils are consultative in nature, in certain cases the bishop is obliged to consult them, e.g., on the advisability of calling a diocesan synod, modification of parishes, norms for parish councils, construction or sale of a church, fixing the amount of stole fees and the imposition of a diocesan tax.
