Resurrection Students Raise Awareness about Cancer
October 18, 2016 • Diocese of St. Augustine

When Maryellen Bell learned she had pancreatic cancer she didn’t let it get her down. She has counted her blessings and has said there have been miracles happening in her life every day since she was diagnosed six months ago. “I am joyful all the time and blessed,” shared Mrs. Bell.

But due to her chemo treatments, she hasn’t been able to be around the children at Resurrection Catholic School in Jacksonville. This must be difficult for both Mrs. Bell and the students! She has devoted a lifetime to working at the school – first as a parent and now as their Director of Development.

The students at Resurrection wanted to do something special for Mrs. Bell. They approached their principal, Pat Donahue, with the idea of honoring her and also raising awareness about pancreatic cancer.

Mrs. Donahue agreed it was a great idea.  The children had a dress down day from their school uniforms and had some t-shirts made using the color purple, which is the color for pancreatic cancer. The students raised $400.

Mrs. Bell said she was so overwhelmed by the love and support of the students. “These children really care and want to make a difference,” she said. The theme for this school year is to teach our students how to make a difference in the world.

It is nice knowing that our young people know how to give back to others – especially to those who have given so much to help them.

God Bless Maryellen Bell as she continues her fight against cancer. I’m sure the students are looking forward to seeing her at school very, very soon!
