October 16, 2017 • Diocese of St. Augustine

On behalf of the Catholic community, the pastors of the Catholic Churches in Gainesville have united to oppose the scheduled appearance of white nationalist Richard Spencer and his racist message. He is scheduled to speak at the University of Florida on Oct. 19.

Father John Phillips, the pastor of Holy Faith Catholic Church and spokesperson for the Catholic Churches, shared the following joint statement:

“We want to make it clear that white supremacy and its many manifestations are not consistent with Christianity. Jesus said it most simply: “Love one another as I have loved you.” (John 15:12)

The U.S. Catholic Bishops are also clear: “Racism is not merely one sin among many, it is a radical evil dividing the human family…” (Brothers and Sisters to Us, No. 39).

The community is invited to pray for racial equality and respect on Oct. 18, at 7:00 p.m., in response to Richard Spencer’s appearance. The prayer vigil will be at Holy Faith Catholic Church, 747 NW 43rd Street in Gainesville. We will continue to give witness to the equality of all people here in Gainesville and our nation.”
