FLCAN Advocates for Parental Consent on Minors’ Abortions
February 19, 2020 •

he Florida Catholic Advocacy Network has recently released an Action Alert asking Catholics to urge their representative to vote “yes” on parental consent prior to a minor’s abortion.

A parent must consent to medical and surgical treatments for minors, including ear piercing and dispensing aspirin at school. However, this is not the case when a minor seeks an abortion.

SB 404 (Stargel) and HB 265 (Grall) require that a parent or legal guardian provide consent before a minor can terminate her pregnancy. The bills includes a judicial waiver process when parental abuse is a concern.

The Florida Senate passed SB 404 earlier this month, and the House is scheduled to take up the bill for final passage this week.

The Florida Catholic Advocacy Network or FLCAN is a statewide, online community established by the bishops of Florida that exists to connect, educate, and mobilize Catholics across Florida’s seven dioceses on public policy issues pertaining to life, dignity, and the common good.
