Americans are urged to support the Hyde Amendment

A Letter from Bishop Felipe Estévez

The Administration’s federal budget proposal to eliminate the Hyde Amendment and some related pro-life provisions are of deep concern. The Hyde Amendment, which has been in effect since 1976 with bipartisan support, prohibits the use of federal funds for abortion, except in cases of rape, incest, or to save the life of the mother.

This bipartisan agreement has been broadly supported by a majority of low-income women, including women of color who are most affected.

Taxpayer-funded abortion represents a failure to serve women in their maternity by funding despair and death instead of hope and life

Since 1976, nearly 2.5 million babies and mothers experiencing difficult circumstances have been saved from the tragedy of abortions. Across our country and communities are centers, agencies and faith-based organizations that walk beside women with unplanned pregnancies and mothers offering real assistance.

This is a critical time in our nation’s history to uphold the Hyde Amendment and stir the hearts of citizens and our Congress. Human life truly depends on your voice. Before Congress moves forward to impose taxpayer-funded abortions, we must send an unmistakable message that No taxpayer funds should be used for abortions.

Please join me in sending this urgent message to Congress by signing a petition at NoTaxpayerAbortion.com.
