National Catholic Reporter, Catholic Sentinel among winners of CMA awards

WASHINGTON (CNS) — J.D. Conor Mauro, who is editor of ONE magazine, the Catholic Sentinel of Portland, Oregon, Nuestra Voz, Health Progress and Parable magazine were among the big winners of the 2021 Catholic Media Association’s Excellence Awards, announced June 10, the final day of the 2021 Catholic Media Conference.

Mauro won first place in the “Editor of the Year” category, followed by second-place winner Joan Frawley Desmond of the National Catholic Register and third-place winner Teak Phillips of the St. Louis Review. Pablo Kay of Angelus and Barbara Golder of Linacre Quarterly both received honorable mentions.

The prerecorded award ceremony was streamed on a digital gathering platform during the CMC, which was held virtually for the second year in a row out of health concerns during the coronavirus pandemic.

Nick Osterholt of the Catholic Health Association won the Father John Catoir Social Media Evangelization Award for the “‘Love Thy Neighbor’ campaign,” selected for its timeliness, broad appeal and impact.

The Father Catoir award recognizes the positive impact of a social media campaign to make Jesus known and loved.

Colleen Dulle of America magazine won first place in the “Multimedia Journalist of the Year” category, followed by second-place winner Gina Capellazzi of the Catholic Courier/El Mensajero Catolico and third-place winner Kevin J. Parks of Baltimore’s Catholic Review. Jai Agnish of the Archdiocese of Newark, New Jersey, who received an honorable mention.

Katie Scott of Portland’s Catholic Sentinel took first place in the “Writer of the Year” category, followed by second-place winner Andy Telli of the Tennessee Register and third-place winner Zoey Maraist of the Arlington Catholic Herald. James Ramos of the Texas Catholic Herald and Leslie Miller of the Arlington Catholic Herald received honorable mentions.

Josh Long of the Grotto Network won first place in the “Videographer/Video Producer of the Year” category, followed by second-place winner Matt Riedl of the Arlington Catholic Herald, third-place winner Nathan Proulx of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend, Indiana. Ben Kruis of the Grotto Network and freelancer Katie Rutter received honorable mentions.

Lisa Johnston of the St. Louis Review won first place in the “Photographer of the Year” category, followed by second-place winner Lukas Keapproth of Loyola University Chicago and third-place winner Michael Alexander of The Georgia Bulletin. Jeff Witherow , Catholic Courier/El Mensajero Catolico and James Ramos of the Texas Catholic Herald received honorable mentions.

Sara Travlos of Baltimore’s Catholic Review won first place in the “Graphic Artist/Designer of the Year” category, followed by second-place winner Paul Grillo of ONE magazine and third-place winner Becky Oppman of Grotto Network. Noelani Parys of the Diocese of Orlando, Florida, and Abigail Witte of the St. Louis Review received honorable mentions.

Katherine Laguna of the Diocese of Orlando took first place in the “Social Media Professional of the Year” category, followed by second-place winner Bill Staley of the Diocese of Nashville, Tennessee, and third-place winner Mary Kate Polanin of Busted Halo. Robin Mull of The Catholic Accent of the Diocese of Greensburg, Pennsylvania, and Alayna Masker of the Diocese of Burlington, Vermont, received honorable mentions.

Jennifer Miele of the Diocese of Greensburg won first place in the “Communications Director of the Year” category, followed by second-place winner Mike Schafer of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and third-place winner Joshua Karabinos of the Archdiocese of Denver. Jennifer Drowe of the Florida Catholic, Orlando, and Edmundo Reyes of the Archdiocese of Detroit received honorable mentions.

Nuestra Voz won first place in the Spanish Publication of the Year category, followed by second-place winner El Centinela and third-place winner El Católico de Rhode Island. Vida Nueva and El Pregonero received honorable mentions.

The National Catholic Reporter won first place in the “National Newspaper of the Year” category, followed by second-place winner Catholic Health World and third-place winner Our Sunday Visitor. The Catholic Register received an honorable mention.

The Catholic Sentinel in Portland won first place in the “Diocesan Newspaper of the Year” category, followed by second-place winner Arlington Catholic Herald and third-place winner Tennessee Register. The Criterion, Indianapolis, and the Texas Catholic Herald of Galveston Houston, received honorable mentions.

American Catholic Studies won first place in the category for “Magazine/Newsletter of the Year — Professional and Special-Interest Magazines,” including “Clergy, Religious, Prayer and Spiritual Magazines” The second-place winner was Catholic Southwest, and Shalom Tidings took third place.

The Way of St. Francis won first place in the “Magazine/Newsletter of the Year — Religious Order Magazines and Print Newsletters” category, followed by second-place winner Jesuits Midwest Magazine and third-place winner St. Vincent Monks.

The Josephite Harvest won first place in the “Magazine/Newsletter of the Year — Mission Magazines (Overseas and Home)” category, followed by second-place winner Glenmary Challenge and third-place winner Maryknoll magazine.

Parable won first place in the “Magazine/Newsletter of the Year — Diocesan Magazines” category, followed by second-place winner Vermont Catholic and third-place winner FAITH Lansing in Michigan. The Monitor Magazine, Trenton, New Jersey, and The Catholic Telegraph, Cincinnati, received honorable mentions.

Health Progress won first place in the “Magazine/Newsletter of the Year — National General Interest Magazines” category, followed by second-place winner America and third-place winner Columbia. Living City and U.S. Catholic magazines received honorable mentions.
