Landscapes and Languages: Exploring the Cultural Contours of La Florida and Beyond, March 24-26

Flagler College in St. Augustine is hosting a three-day Flagler IV Conference entitled, “Landscapes and Languages: Exploring the Cultural Contours of La Florida and Beyond,” March 24-26 with an impressive lineup of notable speakers. 

On Friday evening, March 24, Dr. Timothy Johnson of Flagler College will moderate the Tibesar Keynote Lecture on the Franciscan Affects and Landscapes of Loss in Sixteenth-Century Mexico with Jennifer Scheper Hughes of the University of California-Riverside. The talk begins at 7 p.m. in the Virginia Room of Flagler College. 

On Saturday, March 25 there are four sessions scheduled, from 8:30 to 4 p.m. 

Session 1Moderated by Nicholas Miller of Flagler College at 8:30 a.m. in the Virginia Room of Flagler College.

  • The Spiritual Landscape of 16th Century Mexico City: Franciscan & Indigenous Collaboration in the Uppsala Map (c. 1540) with Jennifer R. Saracino of the University of Arizona.
  • Mission and Kivas – A Cultural Landscape as Symbol of Coexisting of Old and New Religious Cultures with Helmut Flachenecker of the University of Wuerzburg (Germany).

Session 2 – Moderated by John D. Young of Flagler College from 9:45 to 10 a.m.

  • Mother Luisa de la Ascensión and the Missionaries with Jane D. Tar, University of St. Thomas (St. Paul).
  • Sor Maria’s Intellectual Reach: A Circumoceanic View with Anna Nogar of the University of New Mexico.

10 a.m. in the Virginia Room

  • Eros, Ministry, and Motherhood: The Gendered Landscape of Franciscan Evangelization with Timothy J. Johnson of Flagler College.

Tibesar Keynote Lecture at 11:45 a.m. in the Virginia Room

  • The Tears in My Eyes do not Allow Me to Speak: A Maya Performance of the Pass with Mark Christensen of Brigham Young University.

Session 3 – Moderated by Mimi Ensley of Flagler College at 2 p.m.

  • Unearthing Mocama Landscapes, Writing Mocama History with Keith Ashley and Denise I. Bossy of the University of North Florida.
  • Who (or what) is Utina? Understanding Timucua Names and Titles with George Aaron Broadwell of the University of Florida and Alejandra Dubcovsky of the University of California-Riverside.

3 p.m. in the Virginia Room

  • The Corrections: Pareja’s 1614 Arte with Doug Henning of the University of North Florida and Seth Katenkamp of the University of Florida.

Session 4 – Moderated by Craig B. Woelfel of Flagler College at 4 p.m. in the Virginia Room

  • “Learned” Friars who Rejected Study? Learning and Education among the First Generations of Franciscans in the Americas with Francisco Javier Rojo-Alique of the Instituto Telógico de Murcia OFM.
  • The Timucua as Implied Audience in Fr. Gregorio de Movilla’s Explicacion de la Doctrina, 1635 with Viviana Diaz Balsera of the University of Miami.
  • Locating the Epic: Translating Genre in Alonso Gregorio de Escobedo’s La Florida with Thomas Hallock of the University of South Florida.

Sunday, March 26, the final sessions are from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Mission Nombre de Dios, St. Augustine

  • Race, Grace, and Place: Contested Landscapes at Fort Mose with Lori Lee of Flagler College.
